Tony Robinson is exploring the West Yorkshire Moors, known as Bronte country, to discover the inspiration behind the works of the legendary Bronte sisters. Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte were born into a world of mills and moors in the early 19th century in Yorkshire. The writing prowess in the Bronte family produced timeless literary classics like "Jane Eyre" and "Wuthering Heights". The Brontë Sisters documentary
The Brontës were a nineteenth-century literary family, born in the village of Thornton and later associated with the village of Haworth in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. The sisters, Charlotte (1816–1855), Emily (1818–1848), and Anne (1820–1849), are well known as poets and novelists. Like many contemporary female writers, they originally published their poems and novels under male pseudonyms: Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. Their stories immediately attracted attention for their passion and originality. Charlotte's Jane Eyre was the first to know success, while Emily's Wuthering Heights, Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and other works were later to be accepted as masterpieces of literature.
The three sisters and their brother, Branwell (1817–1848), were very close and during ch...

Emily Brontë - The Strange One - Biographical Documentary
Emily Brontë is the least well known of the Brontë sisters. She died at the age of 30, having published one major work – Wuthering Heights - a strange, rambling gothic masterpiece that puzzled and dismayed critics at the time, who were troubled by its moral ambiguity.
Like her novel, Emily was also regarded as strange - solitary, uncompromising, uninterested in small talk or social conventions and either painfully shy or bluntly antisocial.
In this video I draw upon my 30 years' experience in psychiatry to explore the life and inner world of Emily Brontë trying to work out whether her strangeness was just the eccentricity of creative genius or something else – an autistic spectrum disorder perhaps.

Charlotte, Anne & Emily Bronte - Walking in the footsteps of the Bronte Sisters
Emily Bronte, Anne Bronte, and Charlotte Bronte lived 180 years ago. We visit Bronte Country and walk in the footsteps of the Bronte Sisters, piecing together their tragic short lives as we visit places they lived or frequented.
The Brontes wrote some of the most dramatic fiction right here in West Yorkshire and many of the places still exist. On our walk, we will head to where it all started at the Bronte's birthplace in Thornton. Visit the school that Charlotte Bronte immortalised as Lowood School in Jane Eyre. See Oakwell Hall which she based Fieldhead on in Shirley. Walk the wild Haworth Moors to Top Withens where Emily Bronte found inspiration for Wuthering Heights, and a whole lot more.

In greek mythology Brontes is a goddess, a minister of thunder beneath the god Zeus. She kind of let herself go. lmao. I really like Alexios' terrible banter here.

The three sisters and their brother, Branwell (1817–1848), were very close and during childhood developed their imaginations first through oral storytelling and play set in an intricate imaginary world, and then through the collaborative writing of increasingly complex stories set therein. The deaths of first their mother, and then of their two older sisters marked them profoundly and influenced their writing, as did the relative isolation in which they were raised. The Brontë birthplace in Thornton is a place of pilgrimage and their later home, the parsonage at Haworth in Yorkshire, now the Brontë Parsonage Museum, has hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Discovering more for yourself
There is a huge amount of information on the Brontës but less on the elusive Emily. Many of the biographies about her are out of print, but Romer Wilson’s Life and Private History of Emily is well worth a read. I really enjoyed the recent fictionalised biopic Emily and the rather more authentic To Walk Invisible. All are available through my Amazon Store. https://www.amazon.com/shop/professorgraemeyorston
